The area of West Penwith has some remarkable reminders of our past - back through the Iron, Bronze and Neolithic ages there are sites that will keep the amateur archeologist busy for weeks. Places like the settlement at Chysauster, Lanyon Quoit, Chun Castle, the Men-an-Tol site and the Merry Maidens stone circle are all easily accessible from the Camilla House and there is plenty of background literature kept on some the less well known sites to satisfy the curious.

There are so many sites to visit in the West Cornwall area that is it is hard to know where to start. A recommended way of getting the best is to take a guided tour with some experts, for example Harry Safari or Cambron Tours. If you wish to go it alone then there are plenty of guide books and maps at the Camilla House and Susan & Simon will be pleased to advise on how to make the most of your time.

To see many of the results and finds of archeological digs in West Cornwall then a trip to Penlee House's museum is a must.

Locally to the Camilla House there are guided walking tours around Penzance and Newlyn that will help you discover the history of the town - this can be with a guide or by yourself with the Penzance and Newlyn Town Trail booklets that will enable you to explore at your own pace – please ask if you would like more information.

Suggestions - Museums

Geevor Mine – Pendeen. Geevor Tin Mine is a Museum and Heritage Centre situated on the outskirts of Pendeen, in the parish of Pendeen with Morvah, in the far west of Cornwall. The site can be accessed from the village of Pendeen, on the coast road from Land's End to St. Ives, and lies on the route of the South West Coast Path. The Penwith Heritage Coast - a National Heritage Coast - stretches some 33 miles around the Land's End peninsula from just south of Penzance to St. Ives.

Porthcurno Telegraph Museum – Porthcurno. Set deep within subterranean tunnels, behind doors foot thick, you will find the story of the origins of today’s internet and the history of world communications. An excellent and worthwhile visit.

Zennor Wayside Museum – Zennor. Situated in a small ancient granite village that is steeped in history on the North Cornish coast is a museum that houses an extensive collection of over 5000 artifacts which reflect the lives of people who have lived in this ancient landscape dating from 3000BC to the 1950s. Falmouth Maritime Museum – Falmouth. Housed in an award winning building on the Falmouth harbour-side, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall transports you into the world of small boats and Cornish maritime history. Easily accessible by Public Transport (bus or train) the museum is well worth visiting as part of a day trip from the Camilla House to Falmouth (shops and Pendennis Castle).
