Let the Train take the Strain

Are you getting fed up with the ever increasing cost of diesel & petrol? Is it putting you off driving to Cornwall? Would you like to give up using the car altogether? Well have a look at some of the deals that can be had when traveling by train. We have been pleasantly surprised what a little work and flexibility can do when looking for train fares - check out some of the examples below.

Great Western Railway

We used the web site for National Rail Enquiries to search for train journeys from major centres in the UK that connect with Penzance by rail - the times shown are the quickest reported for an individual journey from destination to Penzance but some services take slightly longer or less time depending on the option chosen. Prices shown are the 'cheapest' fare illustrated for an adult ticket - often the 'Advance' fare option. Two sets of columns have been illustrated, the first is for the RETURN fare, the second just for SINGLE fares as it is sometimes cheaper, but not always, to purchase two single tickets than the return (strange but true!).

Also consider the use of the Sleeper service between London Paddington and Penzance as this is a great facility (we have used it ourselves recently and the standard of service was excellent and a lot cheaper than you would imagine).

Journeys were investigated on 18th March 2010 with a view to traveling on the 16th of April 2010 (no particular reason - a random date) after 09.00 - the return leg of the journey was set to 23rd April 2010. We have been checking the fares often and have found that prices do change on a regular basis so it is worth looking as far in advance as possible. Another trick we have used ourselves is to go to your local railway station's ticket office and get the staff to come up with a better deal - they sometimes do!

Not all services to Penzance are direct and may require a number of changes, but once arrived at Penzance getting to the Camilla House is easy - a pleasant 15 minutes walk through the harbour or under 5 minutes by taxi from right outside the station.
