Accessibility at the Camilla House

The Camilla House is an AA graded 5 Star Guest House providing accommodation for guests in Penzance, Cornwall – it takes the issue of accessibility for those guests seriously. We believe that every guest should be made to feel welcome at the Camilla House and to that end a programme to make the facilities as accessible to as many as possible has been developed.

What has been done so far?

The “Welcome All” training programme delivered by England’s Regional Tourist Boards (along with other modules) has been adopted as standard at the Camilla House.

The Camilla House is equipped with portable hearing or ‘induction’ loops to make the welcome and check-in more comfortable for our hearing impaired guests. The loops can be used in guest bedrooms for use with the TV amplifier.

For improved safety the Deafguard Fire Alarm system is available for use by hearing impaired guests so as to be alerted to the activation of the Camilla House fire alarm while asleep.

Our room information pack is available in large print version or electronically in PDF format to allow enlarged viewing on the iMac computer for guest use in the Lounge. Our menus are available in large print and Susan & Simon are on hand to assist with menu selection if required.
What are the physical limitations of the Camilla House?

Camilla House was built in 1836 as the town residence of a Master Mariner. As the physical style of the property has not changed very much in the last 170 or so years there are certain physical limitations that need to be taken into account when considering a stay.

Due to the granite steps up from the car park it is not practical for wheel chairs to gain access to the Camilla House and a ramp would not be feasible within the dimensions of the property.

There is no lift at the Camilla House, however the following description is intended to give an idea of the number of steps and stairs that a guest would need to negotiate:

Access from the ground level (car park) to the Camilla House is up 7 wide granite steps with railings.

Access from the ground floor hallway (where guest lounge, dining room & bar and a single en-suite room are located) to the first floor is by a flight of stairs which comprises of:

Access to the second floor bedrooms involves a second stair case comprising of:

Luggage will always be taken to your room for you.
